I grew up believing there were Premium Christmas African American Dabbing Santa Elf Gift shirt two Santa Clauses; the one for white people and the one for black people, and our Santa was still made out to be this jolly old fat guy. (But also an old comedian and stern as f*** lol) “What’s your Malfunction boi?!” Was his favorite saying.
Christmas does have a summer theme in South Africa. The black majority have their own well-established, long-running Christmas traditions which don’t involve snow and men in red suits. The people who are obsessed with snow and men in red suits are advertisers. Advertisers in South Africa usually have a tenuous grasp on the lived realities of actual people. Most of the country moves to the coast and practically lives on the beach. We braai (barbeque) outdoors a lot, we buy cartons of Ultra-Mel custard and ice cream and yoghurt and boxes of biscuits. We drink too much juice and soda. We cook chicken – not turkey and hams etc – and beef curries and yellow rice with lots of cold salads to accompany them. Children get summery “Christmas clothes” to wear on Christmas day. The only people who tend to like setting up Christmas trees are usually grandparents.
